So, What Happens to Your Money After You Invest?
“Okay… I bought a reksa dana. What happens now?” Start by understanding how the fund is processed and how your units gain value.
You’ve made your first investment in a reksa dana, great! But then comes the waiting. You’ve transferred the money, and you’re staring at your app, wondering why nothing seems to happen yet.
Here’s what actually goes on behind the scenes.
1. Waiting for Your Investment to Settle
Once you make a payment, your investment doesn’t immediately appear in your portfolio. That’s because Reksa Dana transactions are processed only on trading days (hari bursa).
If you invest on a weekend or public holiday, your transaction will only be processed on the next working day. It usually takes one to two days before your investment is fully settled and recorded.
2. When the Money Arrives
Once your payment is confirmed and received by the custodian bank, it becomes what we call a “good fund.”
The custodian bank — an independent institution that safeguards investor assets — will safekeep the money under your name and record it properly.
3. Calculating Your Units
At the end of each trading day, the custodian bank calculates the Net Asset Value (NAV) of every reksa dana. NAV represents the total market value of all assets in the fund, divided by the total units.
Let’s say you invest Rp 10 million, and on that day the NAV is Rp1,000 per unit.
Your investment is then converted into units:
10,000,000 ÷ 1,000 = 1,000 units
That’s how many units you own in the fund and the custodian bank keeps this record securely.
4. What the Investment Manager Does
Meanwhile, your investment manager (that’s us at Simpan) works every day to analyze the market and manage the fund’s portfolio.
Our investment team reviews data and makes decisions such as:
Should we rebalance between stocks and bonds?
Which stocks out of 900 listed ones should we hold or add?
Should we keep more short-term or long-term bonds based on yields?
Are there attractive deposit rates we can tap to balance the portfolio?
All these decisions are made to optimize returns while managing risk.
5. When the Fund Buys or Sells Investments
If we decide to buy more stocks, for example, we’ll place an order through our broker. The custodian bank handles the payment and settlement. Once settled, these transactions are recorded in the fund’s books, contributing to your portfolio’s growth.
6. Seeing Your Investment Grow
Every trading day, the custodian bank recalculates the NAV, reflecting how the fund’s assets have moved in the market.
Let’s say the NAV increases to Rp1,100 per unit.
Your 1,000 units are now worth:
1,000 × 1,100 = Rp11,000,000
That’s a gain from your initial Rp10 million investment. All happening quietly behind the scenes while you go about your day.
7. So, Should You Check Every Day?
You don’t need to. Reksa Dana is designed for long-term investing. The daily ups and downs are normal, but over time, your investment’s growth will reflect the strategy and discipline of the investment team.
In Short
Once you invest, your money doesn’t just sit still. It’s securely managed, carefully invested, and continuously monitored by professionals.
Behind that “Rp10 million” in your app is a whole ecosystem of fund managers, analysts, brokers, and custodians, all working to grow your wealth responsibly.
